Brightman Clarke Architects were appointed to design a modern new build home in the garden to the side of our clients home in Ware, Hertfordshire.
Site Assessment
The site was extremely tight with numerous constraints in every direction from issues with potential overlooking to overshadowing and over bearing structures.
However, the site was relatively flat and with houses in all directions finding the right location within the plot would be a crucial element to the success of the scheme.
Design process
We started by locating the dwelling and exploring various forms and floor plans to best respond to the numerous site challenges, determining potential area’s where glazing would be achievable and where we needed to look at alternative ways in which to ensure to home would be filled with natural light.
This process then lead the floor layout study, responding to the positions of glazing to ensure that we maximised both space within the house and engagement between inside and outside spaces.
The material palette was selected to reflect the surrounding area whilst a large feature lightwell was formed to flood the rear, north facing living space with light.
Finally, the landscaping has been designed to create a sense of luxurious outdoor living.
