MOOR VIEW | DORE

The timber frame is going up. You can just make out the crain above the treeline.

As we reach day five of the structural wooden frame installation at our latest self-build home in Dore, we are pleased to report that the project is progressing as planned.

Moor View, our newest self-build home in Dore, represents a unique and thoughtfully designed response to its site’s context. Every detail, from the building’s scale and orientation to the choice of materials, has been carefully considered.

Central to this design is the timber frame, which will be finished with wooden cladding and locally quarried stone upon completion.

Timber frame construction, a modern and innovative approach, is gaining popularity in the UK due to its numerous advantages over traditional methods such as brick or block construction:

  • Speed of Construction: Prefabricated timber frames allow for faster on-site assembly, reducing overall build time and benefiting from quicker completion, especially in unpredictable weather.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Timber is a renewable resource with a lower embodied carbon than materials like blockwork, brick or concrete.

  • Thermal Efficiency: The precision of timber framing enables better and tighter infill and cavity insulation, enhancing the building’s thermal performance.

  • Design Flexibility: Timber frames offer significant versatility, particularly in creating open-plan spaces and facilitating future modifications.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Timber construction can be more economical due to faster building times, less expensive foundations (owing to the lighter structure), and reduced on-site labour costs.

  • Durability and Quality: Modern timber treatments enhance durability, while prefabrication in a controlled environment ensures high precision and consistent build quality.

At Brightman Clarke Architects, we have extensive experience designing and detailing various construction methods, including brick, stone, steel, and concrete. However, as we strive to improve the sustainability of our homes, structural timber frames offer many compelling advantages.
