The Sidings - House Extension | Abbeydale

Introducing The Sidings, Abbeydale

We are delighted to present The Sidings in Abbeydale, Sheffield. This single-storey side and rear extension exemplifies our commitment to creating homes harmoniously connecting with their surroundings.

The original property possessed significant potential but lacked a meaningful connection to its generous garden and picturesque setting. The dining room featured a small window with minimal garden views, while the rear housed a cramped kitchen and lean-to that offered limited functionality and outlook.

Despite a spacious garden extending to a small brook and railway line, accompanied by a charming wooded backdrop, the home's design did not embrace this unique environment. Additionally, the site presented a notable challenge with its significant slope, dropping nearly half a storey from the front street to the rear garden.

Design Approach

Collaborating closely with our clients, we reimagined The Sidings as a light-filled, garden-focused home. Rather than opposing the site's elevation changes, we embraced them, utilising the natural slope to define internal spaces and enhance the living experience. The builders, Walker Build, skilfully executed our design to dramatically open the house, fostering an effortless flow between interior and exterior spaces. The heart of the home is now a stunning kitchen and dining area that serves as a vibrant central hub.

A short flight of internal steps from this central space leads to a snug lounge—a tranquil retreat featuring full-height windows that overlook the garden. These windows open onto a newly constructed terrace, with steps connecting it to the lawn below, creating an ideal area for outdoor relaxation and family gatherings.

Materials and Finishes

We carefully selected materials to harmonise with the surroundings and ensure the extension felt contemporary yet respectful of the original character. Light grey zinc cladding adds a modern touch, while locally quarried stone complements the existing stonework. Internally, the clients chose a soft, warm palette, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Conclusion

The Sidings has been transformed into a beautifully cohesive home that acknowledges and celebrates its garden setting. It is now perfectly tailored to its unique site, balancing functionality, comfort, and character—an inspiring space for family life where cooking, dining, and relaxing seamlessly come together.

“We love this project—the final result was so transformative and has brought a whole new dynamic way of living to our clients' home.” — Jonathan Clarke
